What is an Automatic Spot Welding Machine?
An automatic spot welding machine is an industrial robot designed specifically for automated spot welding operations. It consists of a robot body, a computer control system, a teaching pendant, and a spot welding system. These machines are typically articulated robots, allowing for six degrees of freedom: waist rotation, large arm rotation, small arm rotation, wrist rotation, wrist swing, and wrist twist. This flexibility enables them to reach and weld complex shapes and configurations with ease.

The working principle of an automatic spot welding machine is based on resistance welding. When two metal surfaces are compressed together under pressure and an electric current is passed through them, the resistance to the flow of current generates heat. This heat melts the metal at the point of contact, forming a weld. The process is rapid, typically lasting for milliseconds, which minimizes heat-affected zones and distortion.

Automatic spot welding machines use either single-phase AC welding power supplies or inverter-based secondary rectified welding power supplies. The welding gun, held by the robot arm, includes electrodes, cables, gas tubes, cooling water pipes, and a welding transformer. The transformer's capacity can be reduced to one-third to one-fourth when integrated with the welding gun, saving energy and reducing operator fatigue.
